Copper sulfide mining has never been done in Minnesota. It is much different than the traditional form of iron mining that has such a rich history in the state. Sulfide mining is especially dangerous in northern Minnesota because of two factors The waterrich environment and the lowgrade quality of the mineral deposits.
Sulfide Mining in Northeastern Minnesota Far and away, Metallic Sulfide Mining represents the greatest current threat to the BWCAW and its environs. The extraction of heavy metals gold, copper, palladium, nickel and others from sulfide bearing o re has the potential to contaminate waters flowing into the Wilderness.
Sulfide mining is different from traditional iron ore mines and taconite mining (sometimes referred to as ferrous mining). Sulfide mines have never been operated safely no mine of this type has been known to have operated and closed without polluting local lakes, rivers, or groundwater.ii
Although Minnesota has a long history of iron ore mining, sulfide mining for copper, nickel, and precious metals has never been attempted. Prices for some metals, including copper, reached historic highs in 2011, and some companies have sought to mine Minnesota's lowgrade sulfide ores.
The mining of copper/nickel sulfide ores is a toxic type of mining that is risky to our environment, our workers and communities, and local economies. Mining sulfide rock releases acid and toxic metals and contaminants that pollute rivers and groundwater for hundreds of years, long after the profits are spent and the products buried in landfills.
