Oct 18, 20190183;32;John Britty North, often called the 'Father of Katoomba' for his mining and commercial interests in the nineteenth century, bought the land and the mining lease for Katoomba Coal Mine. North was mining coal as early as 1872 [2] although the mine was not registered until 1878.
Katoomba History. Surprisingly enough Katoomba was little known in history until 1879 when J.B. North opened the Katoomba Coal Mine. Coal was obtained from the side of the mountain near Orphan Rock using a cable car to bring the coal to the top. The now famous Scenic Railway operates in the original cutting in the mountain side.
In 1878 the name 'Katoomba' was adopted and John Britty North developed his coal mine below the cliffs at Orphan Rock and Katoomba was soon recognized as an important mining town. Around this same time Sydney society were discovering the potential for health and recreation in the Blue Mountains.
